Actually, I’m being sarcastic. I’m actually very upset with Tiger Woods and, should I ever have the opportunity to meet him, I would have some pointed words to share with him.
First and foremost, as a christian, I get that we are all sinners. However, on the subject of Tiger Woods, I am less then pleased. Here’s why …
My 11 year old son is a sports junkie. He is an athlete (hockey, baseball, football) and over the past two years, has developed a knack for remembering statistics and fun trivia about athletes and sports in general. I’ve learned so much about players, the game and the various sports he enjoys. It’s been fun to watch hockey and/or football through his eyes.
He’s not really into golf but has been known to watch it every now and then. So, obviously he knows who Tiger is, and is quite aware of his impressive golf resume.
The other day he came upstairs – I suppose he was watching SportsCenter on ESPN – with the following question: Why is Tiger leaving golf indefinitely? And what does it means when he says “he admits to infidelity”?
Seriously, how in the world am I suppose to explain to an 11 year old (and by the way,his 8 year old sister heard the question and now wanted to know the answer too) that Tiger was leading a double life and that everything he portrayed was alll smoke and mirrors.
I probably didn’t handle it right and he probably still has questions and I’ll have to do my best to navigate through the answers in the days and weeks to come.
So thank you Tiger. Thank you for nothing.
I know we all make mistakes. God knows I’ve made my share.
I know Tiger Woods will get a second chance and, when that happens he’ll have my support.
Right now I’m just upset I have to explain his actions to my kids.
Great article Marc! I’m sure you handled it just fine with your son.
God Bless.
Ty
I hear you. I went through the same thing with Bill and Monica. My son was only 7 at the time and I REALLY didn’t appreciate having to answer certain questions and give certain explanations. Been there done that and I don’t envy you or other parents.
I’ll tell you though, I do regret buying EA Sports Tiger Woods PGA Tour for his Nintendo. At the time I thought that it would be good to have role models other than strutting, macho basketball players as a roll model for a Black teenager. Tiger Woods seemed like a nice, wholesome alternative. My bad
