Thoughts On Leadership: The Circle Of Trust

by mvaillancourt on February 7, 2010

Most of us have seen the movie Meet the Parents with Robert DeNiro and Ben Stiller and will long remember the “circle of trust” scene when DeNiro’s character introduced the concept.

Just the other day, I read a twitter post by by Steve Keating, CSE (@LeadToday) that caught my attention and reminded me of the “circle trust.”  The post read as follows:

Everyone hears what you say;
Friends listen to what you say;
Best friends listen to what you don’t say

We all need a circle of trust.  We all need a group of people who will support us, challenge us, keep us accountable and more importantly, keep us focused.

Your “circle of trust” should have nothing but your best interest at heart.  During the good times, your circle of trusted advisors will keep you grounded.  During the tough times, they’ll help you see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Take a few moments and think about the people you have in your circle?

Do they have your best interest at heart?

Are they keeping you grounded?

Are they listening to what you are not saying?

Thinking about it … do you have the right people around you?

To read more on this subject, I highly recommend Keith Ferrazzi’s latest book titled Who’s Got Your Back.

Daniel Pink is fast becoming one of my favorite authors.  I’ve heard him speak twice and had the privilege of meeting him at an event hosted by my previous employer.

Here is a video of Daniel speaking at Google HQ.

Note:  Thanks to Mitch Joel at Twist Image for bringing this to my attention.  Also, there an entire series of video of various speakers at Google HQ.  Just go to YouTube.com and see for yourself!

Thoughts on Leadership: Get Your Head In The Game

January 4, 2010

Too many people I know sit on the sideline.
Too many people I know refuse to step out of the sandbox they’ve created for themselves.
Too many people I know live in fear.
Well, just a few days ago, we turned the proverbial page; started a new chapter; or as Aristotle wrote, got our very own unscribed tablet. [...]
